![]() ![]() Removed construction yards in favour of builder units.looking at the series, Generals just borrowed so glaringly obviously from Warcraft/Starcraft mechanics that it was clearly trying to lure in people from that crowd: Defining a C&C game by those three traits is ridiculous, because if you use those traits as the basis for entry, you can pretty much eliminate everything after Yuri's Revenge. ![]() There are about a hundred things you could list off that are all parts of what makes a C&C game. Or how about Red Alert 3? Their idea of Ore harvesting is to literally slap a refinery right in front of an ore mine. How about C&C 3? Is this not a Command & Conquer game, because you can queue units and buildings from multiple factories? Because guess what, Generals / Zero hour introduced that. How about Renegade? Is this not a Command & Conquer game because it's a First Person Shooter? Even though it has Tiberium, and Kane, and Refineries / Harvesters that collect it? The fact that you define C&C by your very specific points is your opinion.Īnd yes, there are features that are part of every RTS game, that is the defining point of what makes an RTS.īut to say that a game isn't a C&C game because of Most of the people who voted for Zero Hour had been playing the series since Generals. Something that was sort of interesting about it, is most of the people who voted for Yuri's Revenge had been playing the series since the very first C&C game. In the end, it was a tie between Yuri's Revenge and Zero Hour. To many people, Generals / Zero hour feels like a C&C game, and to many, it does not.Ī few years ago, when Generals 2 was not yet announced, EA ran a bracket on the official forums to determine what everyone's favorite C&C game was. Renegade has pretty much none of the features of a conventional C&C game (not even being an RTS), and yet it feels more like a C&C game than Generals / Zero hour.Īnd I think that's ultimately, what it really comes down to. No sidebar, no resource fields, workers/dozers build instead of instantly placing down buildings, no harvesters, FMV's were only added in Zero Hour (and were forgettable at most) and a mid soundtrack (didn't even get Klepacki!). Driving Overlords through a city is a nightmare. Tiberian Sun fixed most pathfinding issues of past RTS's but Generals managed to bring them back. There's also issues that I've had with the core gameplay, pathfinding being the main gripe I had. Furthermore, the realism that Generals pretends to have holds it down, and in the end the art design falls behind that of Tiberian Sun and Red alert 2. Tractors that spray acid and nerds with computers on the front line generating money is hardly realistic. ![]() The game draws more parallels to Starcraft/Warcraft than it does C&C.Īlthough more realistic than other C&C games, it's still hardly realistic. I'm sure there's more that could be added to the list. USA is similarly parodical, but in a pretty soft and self-serving way, like saying at a job interview "my biggest weakness is that I work too hard." All the USA units give that 'Murica vibe, spreading freedom bombs and freedom bullets and freedom grenades all throughout the middle east. Their main money generator is literally a hacker unit that goes and steals money on the internet-'nuff said. All of the Chinese units speak with arguably racist stereotypical accents and bleat out nostrums about China's imperial greatness like they're all brainwashed robots. GLA is completely off the rails and I don't think I even need to explain why they're a parody faction, but USA and China are too. If you pay attention to the unit/faction designs, voice lines, etc there's lots to enjoy.Įvery faction is basically a parody of itself. The game appears to take itself seriously on the surface if you don't think about it too much, but that's exactly why the more subtle humor hits harder. Your criticism of ZH is mostly valid as well, but I will say definitively that Generals does not take itself too seriously. Imagine if the C&C games were still getting ongoing patch support, new content, new game modes, and new maps on a regular basis today. ![]() But the main reason StarCraft 2 remains popular today is because its developer still continues to give it attention and TLC to this day. While not necessarily objectively better than C&C in every way, SC2 does have a lot going for it. but as a life-long C&C fan I have to say most of this criticism is valid. Not surprised you're getting downvoted since this is a C&C sub and C&C has had a long-time rivalry with SC2. ![]()
